Kazakhstan, a key U.S. economic partner in Central Asia, has dramatically reversed legislation curtailing religious freedoms after the measure and the jailings and expulsions of two religious activists caused an international outcry.

KAZAKHSTAN: THE COURT HEARING WHICH NEVER WAS?

Kazakhstan has barred the Hare Krishna community's leader in Central Asia from visiting the country. Kazakh officials have claimed that US citizen Seane Hobgood (religious name Govinda Swami) was found guilty of "illegal missionary activity" by Aktobe Regional court in 2008. The alleged "illegal missionary activity" was a private talk to devotees.

Human rights groups have put Kazakhstan in the spot light for its treatment of religious minority groups. A long running dispute between the authorities and Hare Krishna followers could end with the destruction of the country's only Hindu temple.

Kazakhstan's only Hare Krishna temple could be about to be demolished. Karasai Akimat (administration) has brought a case to seize the buildings on their farm - which include the temple - and demolish them. "We are now almost at the final point," Maksim Varfolomeev of the Hare Krishna community told Forum 18 from Almaty on 9 October.

A court in Kazakhstan decided on 23 October to hand a confiscated Hare Krishna farm near the commercial capital Almaty from the regional authority's ownership into the hands of the man who originally sold it in 1999. Almaty - The supervising body of Almaty regional court on October 23 made the decision on returning land plot of 47 hectares in the Karasay region, belonging to the Society of Krishna consciousness, to its former owner E. Abdykalykov.

ALMATY. The authorities of the Karasai district, Almaty province, render a blow on the image of Kazakhstan by demolishing the houses and buildings of the Krishnas. This opinion was expressed today at a press conference in Almaty by the director of the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law, Evgeniy Zhovtis.
